for Seniors

Our activities and services

Parents & Tots :
For parents and their pre-school children. Held once a week, its purpose is to give parents the opportunity to meet other parents while their children have playtime in a friendly English-speaking environment. Registration fee is $30 per family for the semester (September - December). Let your friends in the French community know. For more information, please call Julie at 418-332-3851.

Do Drop-in :
MCDC brings it support to an activity organized by Holland Centre for the senior population. These afternoon meetings give the seniors a chance to meet on a regular basis and to make new friends in a friendly English-speaking environment.

Community Library :

Come and visit our new and improved library located on 906 Mooney Street West in Thetford Mines.  We have a very good selection of books and magazines as well as daily newspapers in English and a variety of DVDs. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  NEW!   Starting in September 2008, the library will be open one evening a week – Day to be confirmed.

Down Home News :
Our newsletter is published once a month and distributed through our electronic mailing list and community organizations.

Conversation Club:
For those who wish to improve their English-speaking skills, we hold a weekly conversation club on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Registration fee is $40 per person for the fall semester (September - December) and $40 per person for the winter semester (January - June). Let your friends in the French community know. For more information, please call Krysta at 418-332-3851.

Cultural Events :
We organize cultural events and movie nights in English. These events provide an opportunity for everyone to meet socially and have a good time.

The Community Directory :
Get a free copy of our community directory. It contains useful information on community groups, health facilities, schools and much more.

Our Volunteers :
We the help and support of our partners, we provide volunteer services such as transportation, translation services, visits and daily phone calls to the elderly and shut-ins. We also help low-income earners fill out their federal and provincial tax forms.


Our special programs

Turning to the future: Youth Retention
In partnership with the local English school and regional organizations, we work on the development of strategies to counter youth out-migration.

Building for the Future by preserving our Past
In partnership with community members and organizations, this program aims at preserving very valuable historical documents and photographs that tell the story of our community. If you are in possession of such documents, please contact us. A member of our archival team will be in touch with you.

Access to Health and Social Services in English
At MCDC, we are committed to working in partnership with public health agencies to facilitate access to health and social services in English. Do you need help in English or are you looking for a service and don't know where to turn? Give us a call. Our Health Coordinator is here to help you.
