ANOTHER GOOD YEAR FOR MCDC!

On June 19th, 38 community members (an all-time record!) attended the MCDC Annual General Meeting at the new Community Resource Centre in Thetford Mines.  During the meeting, a report on all MCDC activities was presented to the members at the Assembly.  Here is a short summary:

Social and community activities :
Opening of our new Community Resource Centre, movie nights, dinner and show, conversation club, family activities, community library, bowling club, book club, Christmas and St. Patrick “Meet and Greet” and field trips.

For the youth :
Meeting with health professionals, presentation by Emploi-Québec, Alumni directory, posting of career opportunities, babysitting classes.

Health and Social Services :
Information and training sessions, volunteer transportation services, regional internship program, telehealth conferences, information and referrals, publication of two booklets on home care services for seniors and caregivers. 

Communications :
Publishing of a monthly news bulletin « Down Home News », a quarterly bulletin « Partners in Health », a semi-annual bulletin « Welcoming New Faces », a bi-monthly page in the Courrier Frontenac, update of our website, information flyers, press releases.

The MCDC Board of Directors is also pleased to officially welcome three new board members:  Carla Van Delen, Pierre Roberge and Merita Bossé, all from Thetford Mines.  Pierre and Merita joined the board during the last year as replacements for Maureen Small and John Chernysh.  Carla was elected during the meeting and replaces Joanne Brousseau who resigned due to her many professional obligations.  Carla, Pierre and Merita join James Allan (Kinnears’ Mills), Frances Beattie (St. Pierre), Ann Marie Campbell (Ste. Agathe),  Dale Cox (St. Jean de Brebeuf), Ann Marie Powell (Ste. Agathe), Alice Renaud (Thetford), Stephen Renaud (Thetford), Joan Routhier (St. Pierre), Annie Stewart (Black Lake) and Aline Visser (Thetford).  Two seats remain open.  Those of you who would be interested in being part of this great team are invited to call Ann Marie Powell at 418-599-2711 or Suzanne Aubre at 418-332-3851.

MEGANTIC COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

The Megantic Community Foundation supports various activities and groups financially within the community such as the Volunteer Transportation Service, activities at the school and others.  Donations for the Foundation are always greatly appreciated and are welcomed in order to continue to provide these vital services. If you wish to make a donation to the Megantic Community Foundation, a charitable tax receipt will be issued. COMMUNITY CALENDAR

  1. Annual Orange Picnic – July 12th at 11 a.m.:  The Picnic will take place at the MacRae’s Grove just outside of Kinnear’s Mills. Bring your picnic and join friends for a day of fun! There will be supper and a dance in the evening.
  2. Gospel Choir Concert  July 20th at 2:00 p.m.: The People’s Gospel Choir of Montreal will be performing at the Ste-Agathe de Lotbinière Church. Tickets will go on sale the day of the concert at a price of $15 for adults and tickets are free for children under 6. Parents & Tots
This activity takes place every Monday morning, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the United Church in Thetford Mines.  All parents and their children between the ages of 2 – 4 are welcome.  Admission is $30 per family per semester. For more information please call Julie at 332-3851. This activity will resume in September. 

Conversation Club
For those who wish to improve their English-speaking skills, we hold a weekly conversation club on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.  The registration fee is $40 per person per semester.  Please let your friends in the French community know.  For more information please call Krysta at 332-3851. This activity will resume in September.

Community Library 
Come and visit our library located at 906 Mooney Street West, Thetford Mines.  We have a very good selection of books and magazines as well as daily newspapers in English and a variety of DVDs. PLEASE NOTE that opening hours are now Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  NEW!   Starting in September 2008, the library will be open one evening a week – Day to be confirmed.

The MCDC staff and board members wish everyone a happy, sunny and fun summer!

Please note the MCDC summer hours from June 30th to August 25th :

 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday:
9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Thursday: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Friday: CLOSED

MCDC Annual Dinner & Show

MCDC is planning a magical evening!
 
When: Saturday, October 18th, 2008
Where: Golf & Curling Club in Thetford Mines 

Our entertainers for this year’s Dinner & Show are an exciting magical / comedy duo named Elliott Smith and Ian Quick who have been performing all over the world for 39 years. Talk about having a few tricks
 up your sleeve!
 Tickets for the Dinner & Show are $35 and the Show only is $15. Tickets will go on sale in September so be sure to reserve quickly as
your chance may go up in smoke!

MCDC MEMBERSHIP

All members of the English-speaking community of Chaudière-Appalaches and l'Érable are invited to become members of the MCDC. Membership is free and it is a great way to get involved and show your support for your community.
