Official Opening of the new Community Resource Centre

Megantic English-Speaking Community Development Corporation

Thetforfd Mines, Thursday, May 29, 2008: The Megantic English-speaking Community Development Corporation (MCDC) is pleased to announce the official opening of its new Community Resource Centre. The Centre provides easy and free access to:

Information material in English on a variety of topics
A community library which contains more than 2500 books, DVDs and magazines in English
A multi-purpose room for community meetings and get-togethers
A computer with access to the Internet
Leisure space

All kinds of other activities.

The Centre also houses the MCDC personnel. Opening hours are from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Starting in the fall, the Community Resource Centre will also be open one evening a week for greater access for all community members.

The Centre is located at 906 Mooney Street West, in the historical English sector of Thetford Mines, across the street from the only English school in the region and in close proximity to the two local English churches.

Present for the official opening were Mr. Luc Berthold, Mayor of Thetford Mines, Mr. Charles Taker from the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages, Mr. Jean Paré from the office of the Honorable Christian Paradis and Ms. Nathalie Mercier from the office of the Honorable Laurent Lessard.

Mrs. Ann Marie Powell, President of the MCDC, is grateful for the support received by government agencies and institutions which provided financial assistance to make this project a reality, notably, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the City of Thetford Mines and the Thetford Mines United Church. She is also extremely grateful to all community volunteers who contributed their time and their talent to make the Centre a real community space. She stated that “financial assistance is essential to make such a project happen, but the support of the community is even more essential because this is what makes the project really come alive”.

Mrs. Suzanne Aubre, the MCDC Executive Director, is pleased that the personnel are finally located in a space that is easy to access for all community members. “We used to be located on the 3rd floor of an office building with no access to an elevator. The space was great for office purposes but was completely out of reach for the majority of the community members. We are so pleased to finally be able to meet the community on a daily basis”.

The Board of Directors and the staff of the MCDC invite the entire population to take advantage of the services offered at the new Community Resource Centre and to freely share their comments and suggestions so that the MCDC can continue to improve the services it provides.

The MCDC is a non-profit community organization based in Thetford Mines whose mission is to serve the English-speaking community in Chaudière-Appalaches and the sub-region of l’Érable.
