In the hope of providing more support to caregivers and helping them face the challenges of caring for a loved one, MCDC, in 2009, set up a Caregivers’ Committee and developed services to assist community members who are struggling with their enormous responsibilities as caregivers.
We have specially trained volunteers who can provide respite for caregivers who are looking after a relative suffering from Alzheimer’s, cancer or any other serious and debilitating illnesses. This includes those who care for a relative who is reaching the end of his/her life. We have an information corner called the « Caregiver’s Nook » at the Community Resource Centre that contains a well of information in English specifically for caregivers. We also have a monthly Caregivers’ support group called « Care Chat » where caregivers can share freely with other caregivers. If you are a caregiver and would like to have access to any of these services, please call us today!
NEW SERVICE FOR CAREGIVERS:
MCDC is pleased to initiate a new service for the caregivers of our community. If your loved one has been deemed eligible to attend a Day Centre in Thetford Mines but language is an issue for him/her, please contact us. We can help. We will provide a qualified bilingual volunteer who will be happy to not only drive your loved one to the Day Centre, but spend the day with him/her at the Centre. It is our hope that this service will allow caregivers to rest, or do some shopping, and enjoy some respite. To be eligible for the Day Centre participation, your loved one has to be evaluated by a social worker from the CLSC. If language is a barrier and you need our assistance to contact the CLSC, please give Hélène or Chris a call at MCDC 418-332-3851 / 1-877-332-3851.
